January thaw has late arrival.

Thursday 1/28/2016

Weather update:

After a couple weeks of wintry weather, a common January weather feature is entering the game – the January Thaw.  For centuries, weather watchers have noticed a tendency for a period of milder, calmer weather to hit the eastern half of the U.S. during the latter part of January.  This year (it doesn’t happen happen every year) it’s a bit late. We’ve been experiencing a rather weak example of it this week, but it’ll really kick into action by the weekend.  Temperatures could reach 60 or so then, but it’ll be even warmer early next week when even 70 degrees is not out of question. A strong storm will come out of the southwest early next week and move northward through the Mississippi Valley.  That will bring us strong southern winds and warm, rainy weather Tuesday and Tuesday night.  That’ll be it for this year’s “Thaw” as wintry conditions will return by midweek.

The “10 year deadline” has passed.  Why are we still here?

It was 10 years ago this week when former Vice President Al Gore made his (at the time) famous proclamation that if we didn’t make drastic efforts to end global warming in the next 10 years, Earth was doomed.  Well, the years have passed, Earth hasn’t warmed (according to satellite data), we haven’t done much to reduce the supposed enemy – carbon dioxide, and everything seems to be rolling along smoothly.  Of course, Al’s made a fortune acting as the shill for some climate fanatics, so he’ll be well prepared when the end arrives.

If you’d like more detail on Al’s proclamations and predictions, check out this article from the climate website Watt’s Up With That?   http://wattsupwiththat.com/2016/01/25/state-of-the-climate-10-years-after-al-gore-declared-a-planetary-emergency-top-10-reasons-gore-was-wrong/

2015 – Hottest Year Ever?

Last week our government announced NOAA ‘s and NASA’s findings that 2015 was the warmest year on record.  This is based on their analysis of global surface data that they have “adjusted” so many times as to be barely recognizable.  But, it fits the agenda.  Interestingly, our government also pays two groups to measure Earth’s temperatures.  Have you ever heard satellite data discussed during their “hottest this, warmest that” press conferences?  No, I didn’t think so.  The two satellite groups are GSS (Global Satellite Services) and UAH (University of Alabama-Huntsville).  The satellite global temperature surveys began in late 1978 and have closely matched each other over the years.  Why haven’t you heard about them?  This graph shows you why… Screenshot 2016-01-28 at 1.11.58 PM    Satellite data doesn’t support the agenda.

Such arrogance

I saw in Saturday’s paper that the National Weather Service, in commenting on Friday’s (lack of) snow, said that the storm had “underachieved.”  I was dumbfounded!  They didn’t blame the lack of snow on a bad forecast (it was) or on the “models” (they did a pretty good job).  Rather, they blamed the lack of snow on…nature itself!  Nature doesn’t make mistakes, it always does what the physical laws dictate.  So, what happened was EXACTLY what nature intended.  The storm neither “underachieved nor “overachieved.”  It achieved exactly what it was supposed to.   When you look at the snow left behind over the eastern U.S., it is hard to say the storm “underachieved.”

Unfortunately, such arrogance runs rampant through many of our government science-oriented agencies.  From NOAA, NASA, EPA and all the way up to our scientifically gullible President the thought exists that we (mankind) have to stop nature RIGHT NOW!  If we don’t, the planet is going to kill us all.  Nonsense!!!  Who’s to say what the Earth’s average temperature should be?  Our climate always changes, has been for millions of years.  Warm spells, ice ages…it hasn’t mattered.  Life goes one, but it, too, changes.  Estimates suggest that about 97-98% of all the species that have developed on Earth are now extinct.  (Anybody ever hear of a man named Darwin?)  In more recent times, we believe Earth was warmer than now around Biblical times and again for 300-400 years centered around 1050.  Then we had the “little Ice Age” which ended in the mid 1800’s.  Since then, we’ve had an irregular, slow warming.  Over the past 100,000’s of years, what have humans done to survive?  They have adapted to the changing climate.  Or, perhaps a better word to use is (one of my favorites) ACCLIMATIZED.  They have adjusted to the changes in climate.  Now, all of a sudden, that won’t work!  We, as the human race, must stop nature in its tracks!  Our governmental gods say it can be done and have told us how.  They seem to think that we won’t notice if our economy is destroyed and our life style is set back about 100 years, or so.  Such arrogance!

We’ve already wasted trillions of dollars for projects that have given very limited results.  Solar and wind can generate power, but at a cost two to ten times higher than traditional power. (Your tax dollars are paying for that illogical economics.)  Plus, wind and solar need backup “traditional” power supplies because that have “down” times – night and calm winds.  A far, far better use of all that money would have been to rebuild/improve our nation’s infrastructure.  But, no, say our leaders, we can stop nature.  Good luck with that.

But, a happier note (maybe)

Although we humans have greatly altered and changed nature in our time on Earth, nature doesn’t really care.  It just follows the new rules and keeps on going.  The current El Nino has warmed Earth this past 6 months and will ease only slowly over the next 6-9 months.  Meteorologists who study Earth’s climate have studied and observed how climate has shorter term cycles in the weather/climate cycle that the current scare- mongering climatologists ignore.  They say the items are insignificant and are not included in any of the climate models predicting doom and gloom.

Many meteorologists (myself included) believe that plots of two of the items show a much higher correlation to reality than any climate computer model currently used.  Based on these items (ocean currents- major and sunspots- minor), we believe that Earth’s temperatures are due for a return to cooler temperatures after the current El Nino ends (late spring).  The ocean currents and low sunspot numbers, we believe, will provide a cooler Earth for the next 10 to 20 years

Just can’t let this go by…

From yesterday’s CJ…Charles Barkley on Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler…

“Other than LeBron James, he’s been the second-best player in the Eastern Conference all year.”

(As a person who made a living ad-libing, I know how easily this can happen.)

Observations from this week’s snows

Thursday, Jan.14, 2016

The two snows this week pointed out a couple of interesting items: (1) The time and temperature that snow falls is very important and (2) the difference between “snowfall” and “snow accumulation.”

First, according to airport (SDF) data, the two systems had approximately the same liquid water content, so all things being equal we should have had about the same results.  But, we certainly didn’t.  Sunday’s snow fell during rapidly falling temperatures (from above freezing into the 20’s.  The warmer roads, at first, melted the snow.  As it got colder, the roads froze into icy sheets with a thin layer  of snow on top.  Meanwhile, the snow which fell onto the grassy areas didn’t melt (because of no solar radiation at night) and accumulated up to around an inch locally. If that snow had fallen during the day, the result would have been much like what we saw Tuesday.

Tuesday’s snow arrived around daybreak, so it didn’t have the advantage of night to get a jump on accumulations.  Plus temperatures were above 32 degrees.  That snow continued most of the morning, including a strong snow shower around 11 A.M.  That snow shower, if it had occurred around, say, 6 or 7 A.M., would have created a huge mess on the roads.  But, it happened during the day and the roads just stayed wet.

Now, the snowfall vs. accumulation.  This can be confusing because when we forecast snow, we talk about the expected accumulation – how much will my ruler measure on a flat, NON grassy surface.  However, the National Weather Service reports two measurements- snowfall and snow accumulation.  As we saw this week, the two are NOT the same.

Sunday morning’s snow (at night) was right in line with expectations – the weather service reported .8″ of snowfall and 1″ on the ground.  Accumulations are rounded to the nearest inch, so a measured “on the ground” .5″ to 1.4″ would be reported as 1″, etc.

Tuesday, however, was a much different story.  The “official” snow on the ground at 7 A.M. was 1″.  Then came the snow.  It was daytime and temperatures were above 32.  The snow”fall” total reported by the NWS was 1.8″.  At 1 P.M. the officially reported accumulation on the ground was listed as 0.

Good illustration of the difference between snowfall and snow accumulation – we started with one inch on the ground, then a snowfall of 1.8″.  After it was over, we had less than a half inch of snow on the ground.

NOTE:  Situations like this allow almost everybody to proclaim a “correct” forecast.  Monday night, the NWS and many others forecast an accumulation of 1″-2″.  I wasn’t watching Tuesday evening, but based on past experiences, I’d say that a common comment went something like this…”just like we predicted, we had 1.8″ of snowfall…”  They may proclaim to be “correct”, but they were wrong!  And they are trying to convince you they were right.  So, if you are keeping score – give them two strikes instead of one.

There is a difference between snowfall and snow accumulation. although many times forecasters wish you didn’t know.

NOTE:  I don’t know why, but this post today brought to mind an old story circulating about our old “climate specialist” Al Gore.  As you probably know, back in 2007 or so, Al famously announced to the world that due to global warming,  the Arctic would be ice-free (In summer) and the polar bears would have vanished by 2013 or 2014.  Well, here we are in 2016 and the Arctic still has plenty of ice and polar bears.

The comment:  When Al Gore was born, Earth had 7000 polar bears.  Now there are only 30,000 left.

All quiet on the weather front

Wednesday afternoon

That pesky upper air ridge of high pressure is once again building strength over the Ohio Valley, so it appears we’ll be back into hot and humid weather again and Friday.  Once again, daily highs should be 90 or so with the heat index at 95-98 deg.

By Saturday, the ridge is expected to erode considerably as the upper westerlies strengthen and dig southward.  That could produce some rain as it brings in cooler, drier air.  If we are lucky, the next two days may be the last time we see 90-degrees this year.

Stuff

Remember Al Gore’s famous pronouncement that Sea Ice in the Arctic summer would disappear by 2013 or 2014 (depending how you interpreted his statement)?  Well, the melt season ends in a week or two – so what’s the status of the ice?

The ice is doing very well, thank you.  The chart below shows this years ice currently is about 5.2 million square kilometers. That’s still below the long-term average, but has building for the past two years.  And, this year’s ice is also thicker than recently – more evidence that the ice should continue to increase.  By the way, the Antarctic Ice Sheet reached record HIGH levels this year.Sea_Ice_Extent_v2

Another showery day

Monday Afternoon

Good support for additional showers mid to late afternoon and possibly into the evening.  But we are finally seeing a change in the upper air wind pattern.  As has happened on a regular basis this summer, an upper level trough – not as strong as several we’ve seen this summer – is digging southward from the Great Lakes and will push away the persistent humid and shower-laden weather we’ve had since Friday.  Another cool, dry air mass will be moving in tonight and tomorrow.  With more sunshine, daytime highs should be just a little below the highs of the past four days, BUT with much lower humidity, it will feel much better at least through Thursday.

What’s in a name?

After World War II our Earth settled into a gradual cooling trend.  So much so, that by the late 1960’s into the 70’s, climate specialists (I use the term loosely) were proclaiming the arrival of a new Ice Age.  Then, a funny thing happened.  Earth started warming. The fervor started slowly but really picked up in 1988 when that world-famous scientist Al Gore (he has one college-level science class to his credit – got a D) and astronomer James Hansen really got the ball rolling on the global warming scare.  At the time, I was very curious about the fuss being made.  After all, our Earth has been slowly warming since the last ice age ended roughly 12,000 years ago.  Yes, there have been long periods of ups and downs over those years, but the long term trend has always been up.

Oh, but this time was different!  Now, it was OUR fault.  Anthropogenic Global Warming!  This was something new and we’re going to save the world.  I’d been in the weather business over 20 years at that time and I’m thinking…”hmm, human produced changes in our weather/climate.  Didn’t we study about that for quite awhile back in college in, of all places, Climatology class?”  Of course we did.  Mankind has been altering, changing, manipulating, and doing numerous other things to Earth for thousands of years.  The surface of the Earth today  wouldn’t even recognize itself from a picture of the earth 1000 years ago.  Has our weather/climate changed because of our activities?

YES!  But, we don’t know in what ways.  You can’t make as many changes as we’ve made and not have an effect on our atmosphere.  So, what have we done about it?  We’ve adapted.  And, if we want to continue as the dominant animal on the Earth, we’re going to have to continue adapting.  The “newly discovered” AGW was laughable.  The talk about reversing AGW was even more laughable, even to the point of being hilarious (to me).

As we head through the 1990’s, the fever keeps growing.  More and more “studies” come out proclaiming the horrible future that awaits.  I’m thinking how difficult weather forecasting is with a 1-2 day window.  Things usually get very iffy by days 5-7.  And, these climate studies are ALL based on computer “climate models” which have never been proven to work.  Somewhere during my trip through the 90’s I had one of those “Duh” moments.  This is NOT science.  This IS political!

Crossing over into the 2000’s, two additional important things have happened.  On the political front a new administration whose science advisers actually believe this climate mysticism and are pushed it on us.  So far we’ve spent 100’s of millions, perhaps billions, of our tax dollars on studies based on models that do not work (phony science) AND projects that produce high priced  energy to replace the lower priced energy  we should be getting.  Think of all the truly useful things that could have done with that money if it had been placed into rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure.  ADAPTATION

The second important event so far this century has been that global warming has stopped. No warming at all this century!  When it became obvious that the warming had stopped, the climate alarmists were pretty nimble – have you heard “global warming” much in the past 6-10 years?  Certainly not, suddenly our greatest fear became Climate Change.  This is pretty stupid, of course, since our climate is always changing” but the perpetrators  have been very skillful proclaiming that this is the next big threat to our existence.

But, now that Earth has not warmed for well over a decade, that climate change thing just doesn’t sound right either.  So, I’ve picked up on a few government releases in the past week or so now referring to Climate Pause.  Don’t they know that our climate never stops or pauses?  Our tax dollars are working hard!

Stuff

Valhalla must have the world’s best drainage system for their greens.  And the drainage on the fairways seemed very good as well.  Nice job.

Heat and humidity return for the weekend.

Friday afternoon

August is off to a warm start, but at least the humidity is still low.  That all changes for the weekend as both the temperatures and the humidity will be on the rise.  And the models continue their slow decline in rain chances.  So, it looks like a pretty typical late summer weekend…hazy, very warm and humid.  Rain/thunderstorm chances are not zero, but pretty close.  Best chance still looks like tonight, but only at 20% or less.  Saturday and Sunday rain chances will max out under 10%.  Temperatures tonight should drop to around 70 and about 72 Sunday morning.  High temperatures should reach the upper 80’s.  Similar weather should continue early next week.

More climate talk

Yesterday, I closed with a statement about the headlines concerning a return to “an ice age is coming” within the next ten years.  That was not said in jest to mock the climate claims of the past century.  Rather, it’s based on observations of past reactions of weather to ocean currents.  Yes, ocean driven weather cycles.  The two major patterns are the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO).  Both the PDO and the AMO have two phases – positive(warm) and negative(cold).    The PDO was generally in a positive mode from the mid 70’s (when recent global warming began) until it flipped to the cold negative mode around the year 2000.  The Earth hasn’t warmed since.  (What a coincidence!) Meanwhile, the AMO has been generally positive much of the past 25-30 years.  A few years back it started “flipping” but hasn’t settled into the cold mode yet.  It’s expected to definitely become a cold phase over the next year or two.  Historically, when both the PDO and the AMO are in their cold phase, the Earth cools.  (Coincidence?  our warm Earth climate leaders think so.)

Another possible contributer to cooling could be sunspots.  The sun, of course, is the reason why we a here.  But, for centuries we looked for the “solar constant” the exact amount of energy the sun sends our way each day.  For some reason, the scientific community thought this number had to be a constant.  It’s extremely difficult to measure the sun’s energy through the atmosphere, so the answer was never found…until satellites arrived.  Then, we could easily measure that solar constant.  But, it turns out there is no solar constant – the sun’s output varies on a cycle that closely matches the number of sunspots.  Currently we are at the end of a “solar max” that has been the weakest since around 1900.  Low sunspot numbers then were associated with a “cooling Earth”.  Even lower minimums have occurred.  The most well known is the Maunder Minimum – a period of over 100 years of very low sunspot numbers centered over the 1700’s – right in the middle of the period known as the Little Ice Age.  (Another coincidence?  you betcha! says the warm Earth society.)

ALL the CLIMATE MODELS our country’s so-called experts use project temperatures on a straight line upward from 2000 until 2020.  Well, we’re 70% of the way there and temperatures haven’t budged.  Let’s see how things stand in 6 years – I’m betting on colder.

Cool weather is over for awhile

Thursday afternoon

No problems with our weather recently and perhaps just a few bumps in the road over the next few days.  The basic features have remained the same.  Weak upper air disturbances will drift over the region late tomorrow through Sunday, but the main moisture source will stay far south and east of our area.  So, the already weak upper systems shouldn’t be able to produce some light and scattered showers.  At the moment, the most likely time for any showers looks to be Friday night.   Skies should be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 80’s and lows creeping up to the 70-72 range.  Highest rain probability will be 30% for Friday night.

Climate controversy continues

Hard on the heels of my comments yesterday concerning Earth’s warming during the 20th century.  Turns out that the warming (probably aided somewhat by carbon dioxide) was highly beneficial to mankind.  Our government scientists won’t tell us that because it ruins the story they’ve been trying to sell us – that carbon dioxide is evil and will destroy us. Fact is carbon dioxide has been crucial to the development and maintenance of life on Earth.  Without it, we wouldn’t be here.

Well, today’s report  on www.wattsupwiththat.com   shows that the “climate crisis” is a variable thing…and it runs on roughly a 40-year cycle.  A warming Earth was the big concern for about the first 40 years of the century.  Cooling began in the 1940’s and the “an ice age is coming” crowd got very loud in the early 1970 ‘s.   Then, warming resumed  and by the late 1980’s the cry “we’re killing ourselves with carbon dioxide” started to become very loud.  And it’s still going strong… in spite of the fact that Earth has not warmed  this century.  By my reasoning, we should be back to the ice age warnings within the next ten years!.

  • 1989 -“On the one hand, as scientists we are ethically bound to the scientific method, in effect promising to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but – which means that we must include all doubts, the caveats, the ifs, ands and buts. And like most people we’d like to see the world a better place, which in this context translates into our working to reduce the risk of potentially disastrous climate change. To do that we need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination. That, of course, means getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This “double ethical bind” we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. And if it were stable, it would actually be interesting scientifically because it would be the first time for four and a half billion years.” —Philip Stott, emeritus professor of bio-geography at the University of London
  • 2006 – “Since 1895, the media has alternated between global cooling and warming scares during four separate and sometimes overlapping time periods. From 1895 until the 1930’s the media peddled a coming ice age. From the late 1920’s until the 1960’s they warned of global warming. From the 1950’s until the 1970’s they warned us again of a coming ice age. This makes modern global warming the fourth estate’s fourth attempt to promote opposing climate change fears during the last 100 years.” – Senator James Inhofe, Monday, September 25, 2006
  • 2007– “I gave a talk recently (on fallacies of global warming) and three members of the Canadian government, the environmental cabinet, came up afterwards and said, ‘We agree with you, but it’s not worth our jobs to say anything.’ So what’s being created is a huge industry with billions of dollars of government money and people’s jobs dependent on it.” – Dr. Tim Ball, Coast-to-Coast, Feb 6, 2007
  • 2008 – “Hansen was never muzzled even though he violated NASA’s official agency position on climate forecasting (i.e., we did not know enough to forecast climate change or mankind’s effect on it). Hansen thus embarrassed NASA by coming out with his claims of global warming in 1988 in his testimony before Congress” – Dr. John S. Theon, retired Chief of the Climate Processes Research Program at NASA, see above for Hansen quotes

  • 2013Global-warming ‘proof’ is evaporating.  The 2013 hurricane season just ended as one of the five quietest years since 1960. But don’t expect anyone who pointed to last year’s hurricanes as “proof” of the need to act against global warming to apologize; the warmists don’t work that way. New York Post, Dec 5, 2013
  • 2014  – Climate change: It’s even worse than we thought.  Five years ago, the last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change painted a gloomy picture of our planet’s future. As climate scientists gather evidence for the next report, due in 2014, Michael Le Page gives seven reasons why things are looking even grimmer. – New Scientist (undated in 2014)

The actual Global Warming Advocates’ chart, overlaid on the “climate change” hysterics of the past 120 years. Not only is it clear that they take any change and claim it’s going to go on forever and kill everyone, but notice that they even sometimes get the short-term trend wrong…

climate-claims

Worse still, notice that in 1933 they claim global warming has been going on for 25 years…the entire 25 years they were saying we were entering an ice age. And in 1974, they say there has been global cooling for 40 years…the entire time of which they’d been claiming the earth was getting hotter! Of course NOW they are talking about the earth “warming for the past century”, again ignoring that they spent much of that century claiming we were entering an ice age.

The fact is that the mean temperature of the planet is, and should be, always wavering up or down, a bit, because this is a natural world, not a climate-controlled office.

Returning to normal.

Wednesday Afternoon

The run of pleasant weather is beginning its fade.  Another cool night then back to the mid 80’s (at least the humidity remains low ).  By Friday, a  bit warmer and more humid.  The NAM and GFS continue to bring some very weak upper air systems into the area by late Friday into Sunday.  Both models continue to keep any significant moisture south and east.  There could be some substantial rains along the Appalachians this weekend, but it looks like the systems will be unable to get much water this far north. So beginning late Friday, we will continue with small chances for a small amount of rain.

GFS projects the near normal weather pattern to continue for at least the first half of next week.

Climate/Commentary

I couldn’t believe my eyes!  Right there in the CJ before my very own eyes was a story released by the Government stating that cold weather kills far Americans than hot weather annually.  Of course, this is not news.  However the current “climate crisis” crew that seems to control our national government’s science just doesn’t (ordinarily) let that kind of information be released to the public.  Cold is worse than warm concerning mortality.  Fifty years ago the statistics were roughly 2 to 1.  Now, it runs closer to 1.5 to one.  Does that mean that cold air deaths are actually falling.  In this case the answer is yes.  Does that mean that Earth’s warming has actually been good for us?  Yes.  The things that have improved are almost uncountable.  Probably the most important has been the amazing increase in food production (not solely because of warming)  that feeds several billion more people than when the 20th century began.  Interestingly, 40-50 years ago some highly respected scientists were forecasting that by the end of the 20th century, the Earth would be in constant famine and on its way to destruction by constant food wars!  Sounds very similar to what a lot of famous “scientists” are proclaiming about a warming Earth. So, far the warming has been very beneficial, but there’s been no warming for the past 15 years!

As the weekend approaches so does rain, but does it get here?

Thursday Afternoon

The pleasant weather of the past few days will be fading away as more typical July heat and humidity.  As mentioned yesterday, the GFS and NAM models were pretty wide apart concerning the possibilities for rain over the weekend.  Today’s runs show a definite shift by both models.  The NAM has made a big shift toward yesterday’s GFS while the new GFS has made a small jog toward the NAM.  So as of now, they are pretty much on the same page.  Both models return rain/t-storms to the Ohio Valley tomorrow night with the emphasis over southern and eastern KY.  These showers are not likely to reach as far north as Louisville or southern IN.  Showers/t-storms should linger over eastern KY (east of I-75) Saturday morning.  Then, a typical very warm and humid summer afternoon follows.  Sunday’s outlook remains the same.  Most likely hot and humid, but the GFS still is hinting at some t-storms late in the day.  Best chance still looks like south and/or east of Louisville.  Good news for Forecastle.

2014 temperature update

After the cold start to the year, our temperatures have warmed (compared to average) for the past few months.  But, July has hit the downward through the first half.  With a mild El Nino building in the Pacific, a good bet for the rest of the year would be for temperatures to be a little above average.
